Blue light and blue LEDs have been part of our daily lives for many years, especially for lighting and energy-efficient displays. However, the potential of low-cost and compact blue LEDs is far from exhausted with today’s common applications. In fact, initial research has shown that blue light can be the basis for inexpensive, energy-efficient and compatible solutions and systems, particularly in the fields of medicine, cleaning/disinfection and plant cultivation. In the network, the potentials of blue LEDs are to be systematically identified and addressed with concrete developments. This will also include the combination of light sources and LED systems with newly developed sensor and monitoring systems. By monitoring and analyzing the effect of the irradiation and providing feedback to control the irradiation system, this should for the first time enable highly efficient, dosed and targeted irradiation management in the various applications.
